It was a rare sunny day in these parts and for that Grace was thankful as she sat on the hood of her car, waiting for her Mother to finish in school. Shrugging off her jacket she looked around the empty lot, brushing her hair from her face. The music drifted from her car, making her nod her head in time to it, a small bright smile lighting up her pretty face. A bag of chips sat beside her on the hood of the car, and as she pinched one her ears perked up, her favourite song began to play and her smile widened.
“I love this song!” she said happily, her brunette curls bouncing over her shoulders, as she shook her head.
Grace allowed her eyes to flicker back to the school entrance, and not seeing her Mother yet she hopped off the hood and danced her way around to the drivers side. Leaning through the door she turned the radio up before ducking out again, her body already moving in time to the music. As she moved her feet, she danced around the car, bopping her head and singing along. It wasn't out of the ordinary for her to do this, Grace simply enjoyed to move and didn't care who knew it, she simply liked enjoying herself. As she sang along to Lady Gaga's latest song however, Grace failed to realize she wasn't in fact alone anymore...

Days seemed to be getting longer and longer. Winter should mean longer nights and more sleep, hybernation for the wild things of the earth, and wasn't he one of those wild things, after all? Instead, he fell into bed every night exhausted, or dug himself a den in the woods into which he could drop his lupine self when the day had worn on for so long that he didn't even feel like going home to sleep in a bed.
Today Jake was dog tired (hahaha) from hours of chasing down a rogue wandering vampire who had invaded their territory over the treaty line. They'd caught him in the end and left the leech torn into pieces so that Sam could set fire to the remains and they could be done with the deed. But there was something about the chase that always left him feeling exhausted, and he was on his way home for the first sleep that he'd had in three days. Too may hours without it and he could be a very cranky wolf indeed.
At least it was warm. Sunshine in this part of Washington state was a rare thing, but the sun was making its way through the clouds to melt the snow on the ground. The mud was familiar, and his bare feet were covered it in, caked around the nails and slippery on the soles. The warmth made little difference to someone who made his own heat, but the sun was nice, and it helped him to relax a little bit as he headed past the school toward home.
If it hadn't been for the music, it might not have happened. With sensitive ears, Jacob could pick up on a sound much further away than a normal human, and he twitched when he heard the sound coming from the school's parking lot. He was just passing by, but the notes caught his attention and he turned his head, just in time to see a flash of yellow, denim, and dark hair.
Then there was nothing. Everything else was gone. The earth beneath his feet was irrelevant, the sunniness of the weather mattered not. If the first phase had been painful, this was the opposite of that, as though everything that had once been split open was suddenly coming together to rebuild him, to make a broken man whole again. A chill went through his system, tickling down his spine with icy fingers, and it was as though gravity itself led his feet, magnetism guiding him toward her. He couldn't stop his feet from moving forward until he stood right in the path of her dance, so that if she kept moving, she would bump right into his chest.
There were no words. There was nothing. Nothing in the world except for just her. He couldn't think. He couldn't stop thinking. Everything and nothing all at once, overwhelming his acute senses, and he knew for the first time, really knew what he'd been missing all this time.

As she spun around on the spot, Grace caught a flash of brown, she was sure her eyes had locked with someone elses but the moment had ended quickly as she'd continued to spin. There was a strange warmth flooding through her that she couldn't quite understand, it almost felt like something in her had changed. With a shrug of her shoulders Grace figured she was simply imagining things and continued to move, swaying her hips and arms in time to the beat of the music, her back to the road.
Her eyes strayed back to the entrance of the school and still not seeing her Mum she smiled, not minding anymore that her Mother was taking too long in the school. Right now she was at peace and in a strange sort of way, felt a safeness surround her, sure she hated being alone, she hated being so close to the forest and being alone but right now she felt safe. It was as if for the first time she knew there was no reason to feel afraid anymore, she was protected.
With a shake of her head she continued to move, brushing aside what she was feeling. There was no reason for it, and Grace simply figured she was being stupid, either that or she was simply growing more comfortable being on her own so much. With a smile she turned on her heel and immediatley crashed into a solid wall, it took a few moments to register that what she had crashed into was in fact another person. Quickly Grace removed her outstretched hand from the chest of the stranger, a deep blush settling on her cheeks as she finally looked up.
It was then her heart skipped a beat, her mind went completely blank and words failed the usually chatty girl. There stood the most beautiful creature she'd ever laid her eyes upon, and as she met his eyes, that familiar warmth she'd felt only seconds before filled her entire being once more. With a start, Grace realized she was in fact staring, and her blush deepened as she took a step back, her fingers tucking her hair behind her ear as she smiled slightly, "I'm sorry...I didn't mean..." sighing softly she looked up at him, "I didn't mean to bump into you..."

If the sun hadn't been out, Jacob would have been sure that it was his own body heat that was melting the ice of the glacial reservation town in Washington. In January, it was normally cold, but he radiated heat constantly, always warm, even when he went out without shoes or a shirt on, which was often, since clothing felt too constrictive and he didn't like to feel as though he couldn't move comfortably. Besides, clothing was inconvenient when he phased. He was constantly having to purchase more and more of it.
But this was something else, something entirely different. Now, standing in front of a girl whose name he didn't know, he was sure that he was on fire, and that the world around them was simply burning away into ash. To be parted from her would mean the physical pain of separation, and he couldn't bear to think of it. For the first time, he understood how Sam had felt, and his agony of the loss of Bella Cullen melted away as he reached out both of his hands to steady the younger teenager, his brown eyes looking into hers and searching the depths of her soul. What he saw there reflected what he felt going on within his body and his mind, and he pressed his lips together, he jaw clenching as he concentrated on getting his own balance back, even though he was the one holding her up.
"Breathe," Jacob said, though he wasn't sure whether he was reminding her or reminding himself when he said it. He took a deep breath, then glanced over her face again, suddenly worried that she'd done something to hurt herself. She looked fine, but he was nervous, and he wet his lips with his tongue, sure that his hair had to be on fire. Because he wasn't thinking about what he was doing, he reached on top of his head to feel for the fire that he was sure was there, but then he had to laugh at himself since it was just his normal thick black hair. "Jacob Black," he told her, giving no more information than that. The rest of it could come later. For now the gag order prevented him from saying more than Sam would allow. talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talkthink think think think think think think think think think think think thinkother people talking other people talking other people talking[/blockquote][/blockquote] - tag : Grace - notes : say what? - words : 382 - music : Lady Gaga: Born this way - credit : template brought to you by The_Actress. lyrics from icing by charity vance

Grace stood transfixed by the boy in front of her, part of her was trying to copy him to memory, as though scared he could disappear at any moment. She'd never seen anyone like him; it was his eyes that captured her. Something in them, something much too old to fit the youth of his body, there was a kindness there, beauty, pain; grief and laughter, everything that makes this sorry world spin around. Her heart ached for him, in that moment his pain was her pain, his joy was her joy and she already felt like she knew everything about him. It was as if everything was falling into place, it was just them and nothing or no one else existed around them.
Blinking her eyes, she pulled her eyes from his cursing herself for staring. It was then she noticed his hands were still on her arms, holding her up and she could feel her skin burning beneath the denim with his touch lingered. ”Breathe.” she looked up, her heart skipping a beat again when she heard his voice, making her smile softly. When he smiled, it was like sunrise, it was new and fresh and beautiful. His laugh was like a song, a beautiful song and it sent a thrill of happiness through her, a warmness spread through her entire body, every nerve ending was alight.
When he told her his name, her smile widened even more. A part of her had feared he’d walk away, but here he was, talking to her and for that she was extremely happy. Nodding her head, she looked up at him, her eyes twinkling as she tucked her hair behind her ear, “Grace Sullivan...” she told him, chuckling lightly when she finally realised he was in fact not wearing a shirt, it was taking all she had to make sure her eyes remained on his face. ”You heading into the school...” she trailed off and shook her head laughing lightly, of course he wasn’t, he was minus a shirt and shoes, ”None of my business what your doing sorry.” she said shooting him a small smile.

"No," Jacob said with a small smirk for Gracie. "I graduated last year." He shrugged his shoulders casually, though he felt anything but casual. His body was hotter than normal, and he instantly let go of the girl in front of him, briefly worried that he might burn her, half a moment before he realized just how stupid that would be. It wasn't as though his body had burst into flame or anything. Even so, it was as though electricity had shot through every inch of his body, and his blood was boiling. The last thing that he wanted to do was something that would hurt this girl. Which might have had something to do with the first real smile since the day that Bella Swan had become Bella Cullen.
For a moment Jacob hesitated. The wind picked up in spite of the relatively calm day, buzzing around his ears and causing him to dig in his heels so that he could remain fixed on the spot. "You shouldn't be out here on your own," he said suddenly, realizing the dangers that lurked within the forests of La Push, even if this naive girl did not. And it occurred to Jacob, unusually, that naive wasn't so much a bad thing, was it? No, in this case it made her sweet, and for all of his angst, this girl melted his heart, and without thinking about what he was doing, he bent to try to scoop her up into his arms. The car was irrelevant, and the person she was waiting for was irrelevant. "Come on. I have something to show you," he told her, more serious now.

*I'll watch the night turn light-blue But it's not the same without you~ Pour me a heavy dose of A T M O S P H E R E* Grace smiled softly and nodded her head, he was a graduate, ’of course he is’ she thought to herself. Now she actually looked at him she could see he was older, it was his eyes, “Right of course you are...” she said, tucking her hair behind her ear nervously, before playing with the ends. It suddenly occurred to Grace, that for the first time she was at a loss of what to say, everything that came to mind sounded stupid, and then there was that part of her that didn’t want him to feel like he had to stand here and talk to her. After all not many people did, especially not guys, why should this beautiful creature in front of her be any different, she wasn’t the type of girl guys looked at and wanted to spend time with.
When Jacob spoke up once more, she looked up at him realizing she’d drifted off and couldn’t help the small frown that developed. ”It’s perfectly safe, my Mums inside...” she said, suddenly feeling like a child who was being chastised. A part of her couldn’t help but feel offended, why she didn’t know, with a shake of her head she forced herself to stop being so stupid. Jacob was perhaps worried about her safety, again, why she wasn’t sure, he didn’t even know her, why should he care what she did or where she did it. Then again, there was another part of her that knew he was right, knew he WAS worried about her, that a part of him cared in some way.
As he began talking again however, cutting in before she herself could open her mouth to break the small silence which had fallen between them, Jacob bent forward reaching out as though to pick her up, whilst telling her there was something he had to show her. Grace took a half step back, wincing at the pain it caused her to do so, her hands in front of his, halting his movement. One thing Grace wasn’t was stupid and even though she knew Jacob wouldn’t hurt her, they had only just met and she knew what her Mother would say once she found out Grace had so, casually wandered away with a stranger, ”What is it you want to show me?” she asked, pulling out her phone as it went off. One glance at it and she saw it was from her Mother, explaining she had at least an hours more work to do. Grace sighed softly, pocketing her phone and looking back up at Jacob, she trusted him and took a step forward, returning to her previous spot. "Where we going?"

At some point, carrying girls around had become second nature to Jacob, and he was a bit surprised when Gracie stepped back from him. For a moment he stood, trying to identify the tight feeling in his chest that threatened to suffocate him if he didn't get control of the sensation and learn how to breathe again. It took a moment before he got a good, deep breath in once more, and he took a step toward the girl. "I'm not gonna hurt you," he said gently as he reached back for her hand, the flesh cool in his. He ran his fingers over the back of her hand and the smiled at her, nodding his head. "There's a spot in the woods where I think we should go to talk."
Briefly, Jacob thought of showing her more than just a spot in the woods, but the reminder echo of Sam's voice in his head told him that it would be a bad idea to break his silence for a girl, even if all of Jacob's thoughts were suddenly focused on the object of his affections. He balled his hands up, fighting for a moment to concentrate his thoughts on something other than on the girl in front of him. The rest of the pack understood what had happened because he'd imprinted and that was how the pack mind worked, but he couldn't push it back, and he took a deep breath and stepped toward Gracie again. "Come on," he said again, this time waiting a moment before he made another move. He didn't want to scare her off. The last thing that he wanted was to scare her off. He'd prefer to carry her if she would let him, but he wouldn't fight with her about it.
"I won't hurt you. You're safer with me than you are out here by yourself. I promise you, Gracie," Jacob said, extending his hand again.

Perhaps that should have seemed strange to her, but somehow it felt oddly right and normal, instinctive. When his hand gently took hers, she felt her breath catch, wondering if she was imagining the heat radiating from his skin she looked down, her heart skipped a beat as she smiled softly. His hand dwarfed hers, ’A perfect fit she thought, laughing softly to herself before looking back up at him as he continued to talk, the mention of the woods catching her attention.
For a moment her eyes flickered over his shoulder towards the forest and she felt an uneasiness coarse through her. Grace had never liked the forest, something about not knowing what lurked inside set her on edge, but looking back at Jacob then over her shoulder to the school she sighed softly. Grace knew she’d be going with Jacob, there wasn’t really a question about it in her mind anymore, some invisible force was pushing her to go with him. ”I have an hour, before my Mum finishes up she told him, her voice soft as she gave him a small smile.
When Jacob stepped even closer to her, urging her to go with him, she nodded her head, her heart thudding so loudly against her chest she was sure he’d hear it. ”Lead the way

More than anything, Jake wanted to pick her up and lift her into his arms the way that he had with Bella so many times when they were trying to avoid trackers or mask her scent. He could protect her that way, masking the human scent of Gracie with his own, stronger odour. But she had sidestepped him once, and he didn't want to intimidate or frighten her. More than anything in the world he wanted to protect her from all of the evils in the world; the vampires, the werewolves, the things that crept up out of the earth and threatened humanity at every turn. But he couldn't do that, and he shook his head as he reached for her hand, giving it a gentle squeeze and then turning out into the forest so that he could lead her to where he wanted to go, a special spot where he sometimes went to think so that he could isolate himself some from the internal (and infernal!) voices of the pack. He could hear them now, some happy for his find, others disgruntled, and a couple of lonelier sounds that he didn't quite recognize.
Gracie almost drown all that out, but there was still the sense of them, the constant feeling of their closeness, even when he would prefer to focus on her, and he sent his thoughts out in a wave. Shut up! Laughter. It figured. He shook his head and wrapped his arm protectively around Gracie's waist as he led her into the forest. "If we're pressed for time you should let me carry you back. I'm faster than you'll be on foot. And you aren't heavy," he assured her, though he'd never lifted her before and had no idea of whether or not she'd be heavy once he had her in his arms. He was strong, so he wouldn't have any problem at all carrying her if he had to.
Turning with his arm around Gracie's waist, Jacob made it through the curtain of the trees, the immediate stillness striking him and putting him instantly on edge. But there were no strange scents other than that of the pack, and that reminded him that much of the wildlife was intimidated by their kind as they were by the leech kind. He shivered, then shook his head as he drew her toward the stream where he sometimes went to think. It would be a good place for them to talk, and he could tell her about the things he wanted to say. If he was lucky, she could be led the way that he had once led Bella, and he wouldn't need to worry about breaking the pack's confidence.

*I'll watch the night turn light-blue
But it's not the same without you~ Pour me a heavy dose of A T M O S P H E R E* Jacob took her hand, squeezing it gently and before Grace could react in any sort of way, she was being led away from the car park and towards the forest, sending her nerves right on edge. As they walked away from her car, Grace looked over her shoulder once more, her eyes flickering to the school where her Mother was, the cautious side of her wondering if she was making a grave mistake, heading off with a stranger, but then the other side of her knew everything would be okay and she turned back around, her nervousness about the forest though still there, though somewhat lessoned when she remembered Jake.
When he offered to carry her back, telling her she wouldn’t be heavy and was faster than her, she raised her eyebrow and smiled playfully, a small laugh escaping as she shrugged her shoulders, “I’m pretty fast on my feet to you know...” she told him, after all she was on the track team at school, and did engage in daily morning runs. It took all she had to remember to breath when his strong arm wrapped around her slim waist, it was an intimate move and she felt the blush in her cheeks flare up once more. Blowing out a small breath she looked away from Jacob, needing the distraction as they walked and she let her eyes take in their surroundings, almost warily scanning the dark forest they were now in.
It was unusually silent and that sent a shiver down her spine, shaking her head Grace looked up at Jacob, and then looked forward when she heard the distinct sound of water running. She felt Jacob shiver and looked back up at him, her uneasiness about the forest increasing as she gently removed his arm from around her waist, instantly mourning it’s loss as she put a small gap between them. It suddenly occurred to her how naive she was actually being, for some reason, yes she did trust Jacob, but she still didn’t know him, not really and when it came to guys she was always cautious so why suddenly change. Grace continued to walk with Jacob, her hands balled up at her sides as she kept her eyes on the ground so as not to fall, ”Can I ask what you want to talk about?” she asked, looking up at him, sure they were near the stream now as the sound of the water grew louder.

"Legends," Jacob told Gracie instantly. He could hear the drumming of Seth's thoughts in his mind, the cheering of his pack mates, and he let out a low groan at the thought of facing Leah after everything that had just happened. They'd been fairly close after Sam imprinted on Leah, but now he was going to have to tell her that he'd found his imprint and that, although not alone in the pack, she was one of the only ones left without her mate. He sighed, shaking the thought off as he led Grace into the woods, then finally stooped to sweep her up into his arms, cradling her protectively so that the hazards and the dangers of the woods wouldn't be able to get to her. Somewhere in the distance a wolf howled, and he smiled at the thought that most people would naturally fear that sound. He hoped that after today, it would make Gracie think of him.
Think of me. Well that was something different. He'd never expected anything like that before, and for a moment his heart seemed frozen in his chest, painfully reminding him that he would never want to be separated from this girl for very long again. "How much do you know about our legends?" he asked Gracie as he stepped over a fallen tree and headed toward the stream that was his destination. "The Quileute legends, I mean. How much do you remember from what you've been taught?" Somebody would have said a thing or two about the way that things had once been for their tribe, he was sure. Maybe she'd heard about it at school or her parents had told her. Friends whispered, or maybe there were rumors about the large wolves in the woods and the whisper of a suggestion that maybe it was beginning to happen again. Either way, he wanted her to come to the conclusions herself instead of him phasing in front of her and embarrassing himself if she ran from him.

*I'll watch the night turn light-blue But it's not the same without you~ Pour me a heavy dose of A T M O S P H E R E* ”Legends? Grace repeated, a note of surprise in her tone, of all the things she imagined he’d want to talk about, this had been the last thing. Actually come to think of it, she didn’t know what she’d been expecting to talk about really. She heard him groan and looked up at him curious, but she didn’t say anything. Instead she continued to walk beside him, glad she only stumbled once, her senses were on high alert and she let out a surprised gasp as Jacob swept her up into his strong arms, holding her almost protectively against his chest. Her body tensed at the sudden intimate position he was holding her in, it’s not like she didn’t trust him, but she’d know him for less than 20 minutes, she knew nothing about him and he knew nothing of her.
The sound of a wolf howling caught her attention making her jump slightly, her arm wrapping around his shoulders as she looked around quickly. His next question caught her off guard, stopping her from asking him to put her back down, especially as he stepped them over a fallen tee. Biting down on her lip she turned back to Jacob, shrugging her shoulders ever so slightly. Of course she knew of the Quileute’s, she’d read a book on tribal histories, and with her Mother also working at the school, she knew a bit, but really Grace was confused as to why it mattered right now. Why did him knowing how much she knew about his tribe, matter to him?
“Honestly, not much...I know most of your tribes history is a secret...” she said, a frown on her face as she thought for a moment, turning to look at the stream they were approaching. Some of the stories she’d heard about the tribe, she knew were probably untrue, ”Mom said the Quileute’s are apparently the descendants of wolves...I know your tribes not overly large...you apparently have...” she trailed off and sighed, “Why is what I know so important?”

"It matters because it's true," Jacob said to Grace as he set her on her feet and turned to look into her dark eyes, his own head cocking slightly to the side with a curious expression that was almost dog-like as he studied her face, looking for any indication at all of what she was thinking about what he'd just said, or if she'd even managed to put two and two together. If she hadn't, he'd work with that, but for right now he felt that the best way to guide her there was to allow her to feel her way as he felt his. Everything was different now that he'd seen her, been near her. The thought of being geographically separated was nearly painful, and if the thought felt like that, he couldn't imagine what it would be like to actually experience it. By itself the thought sent a cold chill through him, and Jacob rubbed the heel of his hand along the side of his face as he turned away from Gracie, considering what he knew, what he had to say. "It's beautiful out here. I like to come out here to be alone and think about things. To get away from..." But he couldn't finish the thought out, he thought, without startling her.
"It isn't so much that we're descended from wolves. That came... after. But our ancestors have a... a gene I guess. Well, I mean some of us have it now too." No, it wasn't coming out right, and Jake closed his eyes, blowing air out through his lips in frustration, then went to stand near the stream, crouching and putting his hand into the cool running water. "Some of the members of our tribe are able to change their form to that of a wolf," he said finally, biting the bullet and putting the thought out into the air before he could chicken out and clam up again. The hooting and hollering inside his head told him that at least one member of the pack thought he'd done the right thing. Thanks Seth, he thought to himself, groaning inwardly.

*I'll watch the night turn light-blue But it's not the same without you~ Pour me a heavy dose of A T M O S P H E R E* “It’s true?” Grace repeated a hint of disbelief in her voice as she looked at Jacob, not sure exactly what part of what she’d said he was claiming was true. Obviously it had to be what she’d said about the tribe not being that large, anything else was simply crazy. Jacob set her down on her feet and her momentary relief was quickly drowned out by the overwhelming loss she suddenly felt because she was no longer in is arms. Shaking her head she laughed softly and looked up at Jacob, his eyes searching hers, for what she didn’t know but there was something in them and something in the air around her that told her, her entire life and what she believed to be true, was about to change completely.
She had to agree with Jacob, it truly was beautiful here for a moment she was stunned into silence by its beauty. However Jacob’s presence called for her attention once more, he was turned away from her and she couldn’t help but will for him to turn back to her. Now he was talking about a gene his ancestors and some of his people today had? Jacob was struggling to tell her something, he’d trailed off now, letting out a sound of frustration as he crouched beside the stream, his back remaining to her. Sighing she made to move over to him, not knowing why she felt the need to be so close to him when Jacob spoke again and this time she stopped dead.
Wolves? Was he seriously claiming that the legends were true? Did he really think she was that stupid? She felt hurt, insulted but there was a bigger part of her that was calm, a part of her which readily accepted what Jacob was saying, as though it was truth! Grace sighed, shaking her head at that part of her as she looked away from Jacob, “Wolves? You want me to believe...you want me to believe that your tribe, at least some of them are shapeshifters?” she shook her head, now Grace believed in a lot of things but this was impossible, or was it. There’d always been talk of wolves bigger than humans in these woods, and instinct was forcing her to believe Jacob. “I don’t know...” she sighed, turning away from Jacob.
